Where is your bakery? I need a cookie fix right now!
We don't have a retail space. We bake to order and deliver to locations in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Fox Chapel Area neighborhoods. If you don't live in one of those areas, we can arrange to meet you to give you your baked goods at a location convenient to both of us.
How do I place an order? There's nowhere on this website to do that.
We like to talk to our customers to find out exactly what they want, need, and dream of. You can e-mail us at info@sweetbakery.org or phone us at 412-759-3205 (Naomi) or 412-780-2109 (Betty). If you catch us while we're driving, we may ask if we can call you back when we can focus on your order.
Can I get just a few cookies/brownies/cupcakes?
Because we bake to order and don't sell retail, we can't split orders — we probably won't have an order for the leftovers from your order. This is why we price items by the dozen or more. The minimum you have to order depends on the individual recipe.
Can I get a mix of different things?
Yes, if you'd like a variety, we recommend our cookie platters. Please see the descriptions. And, of course, you can order several different items — an order of chocolate cupcakes, say, plus an order of vanilla cupcakes.
Why are you so expensive?
We bake each order by itself, in small batches. We use high quality ingredients such as Plugra butter, Callebaut chocolate, and fresh (not frozen) eggs. We take the same care in making your baked goods as we do when baking for our own families, and we deliver them to you attractively packaged. In addition, profits are donated to charities that benefit local residents as well as victims of natural disasters.
Why is there a minimum order?
Because we deliver, we have to have a minimum order of $24 to make our trip to your house.
Why do I have to put a deposit down on my pie?
We've never found a disposable pie plate that satisfied our high standards for cooking traits and durability. So we've decided to use glass (Pyrex, Fire King, Anchor Hocking) pie plates. If you return the pie plate to us undamaged, we'll refund your full deposit. We can arrange to pick up the empty pie plate the same way we got it to you when it was full.
Can you make my cake pretty?
At this point, we don't have a trained cake decorator on staff. Your cake will look enticing and taste fantastic, but it won't look like it came from a bakery. Some people think that's a good thing!
Do you bake bread?
We make challahs every Thursday for delivery on Fridays in Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Fox Chapel. We also make bake-and-serve rolls and cinnamon rolls, which we deliver to you frozen for you to bake at your pleasure.
Do you ship your products?
Talk to us about sending your favorite goodies to your favorite sister/college student/high school teacher! We can ship certain cakes and cookies, but not all. Certain items ship well and improve over time — we highly recommend our butter-rum cake and our brown-sugar pound cake, as well as the sour-cream coffee cake. Cheesecakes can only be shipped in the winter, and will be sent off frozen (they will defrost gradually and be ready to eat by the time they get there). Our "Elegant" cookies can't be shipped, except for Helen of Troy brownies and shortbread. For college students, we recommend brownies, but be aware that some colleges forbid peanut products in their dorms, so any of the peanut-butter brownies may not be a good choice. Check with your college.
I have a hankering for a baked item not on your list. Can you help me?
There's nothing we like so much as a good challenge. If you have a recipe you want us to make for you, call us. If you want us to find a recipe for something you once tasted, call us. If you want us to add, subtract, enhance, or alter a recipe that we make to your liking, call us! We can leave out or add flavors, leave out or add nuts, chocolate or other chips, bake cakes in different shapes, ice cupcakes in different colors... we like making people happy, so give us a chance!
Do you need any taste-testers?
Thanks, but we have a long waiting list!
Mom, what's for dinner?
Not now, dear, I'm working!
